Discover The Merlion Park Singapore

One of the most beautiful areas to admire Singapore in all its splendor is the Merlion Park. In this park, under the skyscrapers of the bay and next to the seashore, is where the best-known statue of Merlion, the symbol of Singapore, is located.

Half fish and half lion, Merlion is the image of Singapore, an image that you will find throughout the city. It was designed in 1964 as the image of the Ministry of Tourism of Singapore.

The lion's head represents the lion that Prince Sang Nila Utama discovered when he re-discovered Singapore in the 11th century. The fishtail represents the fishing part of the city when it was still known as Temasek.

When Sang Nila arrived in Singapore he changed the name of Temasek to Singapura (Lion City, "singa" means lion and "pure" city).

Discover The Merlion Park

The Park

In the park, you will find two statues of Merlion, one large and one small. The big statue spits water into the bay and is the most famous. Next, to the large statue of Merlion (8.6 meters high and 70 tons), lots of tourists crowd to make one of the typical photos of Singapore. Rare is the traveler who does not remember a photo under the water that expels the curious feline.

Better at Night

The best time to visit Merlion Park is when Singapore dresses up at nightfall. The image of the skyscrapers of Singapore illuminated with Merlion in front will become the postcard that will appear in your mind every time you think of the city.
